Doug has over 20 years of experience representing the citizens of Apache Junction in local and regional government.

Regional Government Representative

Doug was privileged to represent the City of Apache Junction in many regional government organizations. He served as the city representative to the Central Arizona Association of Governments from 1995 to 2007 and as the President of the Pinal County Governmental Alliance in 1997. Doug played a major part in the City of Apache Junction becoming a member of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) in 2002, giving the City an important voice in decisions affecting the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, and served as the City representative to MAG from 2002 to 2007. These planning councils develop policies on a regional scale in areas such as transportation, air quality and other environmental programs, and human services, all of which affect citizens outside of individual municipal borders.

Doug also represented the City at a statewide organization for municipal governments, the League of Arizona Cities and Towns (League). Among other things, the League represents the interests of local governments before the Arizona Legislature. Doug served as an Executive Board Member of the League from 1992 to 2007. During his time on the Executive Board, he served as Treasurer from 2003 to 2005, Vice President from 2005 to 2006, and President from 2006 to 2007. Doug was honored with a lifetime membership to the League in 2007.

City of Apache Junction

Doug was first elected to the Apache Junction City Council in 1991. After serving on the Council for 4 years, he was elected Mayor in 1995. Doug was subsequently reelected as Mayor in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2005, eventually serving 6 two-year terms. He was the first Mayor in the history of the City to be reelected by the voters. In 2007, Doug opted not to run for reelection and took a brief break from serving in local government until November 2008, when Doug was unanimously appointed to the City Council to fill a vacancy. He won reelection to the Council in 2009, where he served until January 31, 2012, when he resigned to run for the Arizona House of Representatives.
